Good Red Wine
What is a good red wine ? With so many answers to this question the result has to be right for you, and what I mean by this is whether your in a fine dining restaurant with a sommelier at the table, or in your local wine retailers don’t be afraid to ask to describe what you like and dislike, after all these are professionals with all the tools to assist you with your decision.
Having said that there’s nothing wrong with becoming a your own wine critic, try experimenting , the best way to learn about wine is to get out of your comfort zone. With the vast majority of red wine being consumed whilst dining, a huge part of knowing what is good red wine is knowing what foods it marries with, now when first imagined this seems like a huge task with endless possibilities and in some ways it is but that is all part of your journey with wine and the only true way to learn what you really enjoy.
Ok so how do you know which bottle of red wine is going to be perfect for the slow baked lamb you’ve just ordered, firstly your not just combining tastes but also textures so when the ingredient’s are melting in your mouth you need a wine that is going to give you some substance and depth therefore a spanish rioja reserva would be an ideal candidate with an 18-36 month casking in oak process the reserva really does stand up amongst some of the biggest dishes. The reason I use the term candidate is because you ultimately as the consumer have the last say and there is no manuscript to tell you that your wrong with your choice, of course there are guidelines but that’s just what they are guidelines.
High quality red wines do not have to mean high prices either, whilst you can spend small fortune on wine and yes it would be some wine-tasting experience sampling a £3000 bottle of wine, but you can get just as much enjoyment from finding a wine that really suits your own pallet regardless of the price. Once you have honed in on what really works for you, whether that be a wine-making region or a particular grape variety that’s when the fun really starts, maybe its working through the new age wines or diving head first into the history of red wine in either France or Italy two of the finest exponents of producing a good red wine is what gives you the most pleasure. Whichever it is, enjoy every glass.
